White executive Walter Whitney (George Segal) learns unexpectedly that he has a teenage black son, Roger (Denzel Washington). Fearing that his uptight neighbors won't approve, Walter tries to dismiss his new houseguest's arrival as race-related research. But soon his secret's out, and he loses his job and his wife (Susan Saint James). Forced to start over with nothing, Walter learns firsthand about the challenges facing many minorities.
