Seconds before launch, the first NASA astronauts bound for Mars are pulled from the capsule and told that mechanical problems would have killed them in flight. They're then asked to fake the Mars landing. The astronauts (Sam Waterston, James Brolin and O.J. Simpson) agree, but as a reporter (Elliott Gould) starts uncovering the truth, events require NASA to turn its three heroes into martyrs.
