Edward G. Robinson heads the cast as tough New York City cop Johnny Blake, who gets tossed off the police force for punching out his boss in this first-rate crime drama helmed by William Keighley. Delighted with the turn of events, mob kingpin Al Kruger (Barton MacLane) -- despite the suspicions of his chief goon (Humphrey Bogart) -- adds Blake to the payroll. Has he really changed sides, or is Blake a plant sent to infiltrate MacLane's rackets?
