A priest, Father McMahon (Tommy Lee Jones), gives last rites to a man murdered on the streets of New York, only to have his life changed forever. With the help of the dead man's girlfriend (Annette O'Toole), Joseph begins to learn more about himself and the world around him. With this awakening, though, comes the realization that he must choose between the life he's always known in the church and the one he's just discovering with this woman.
