Birth of the Blues / Blue Skies: Double Feature
(1941)|
Der Bingle (Bing Crosby, to you!) shines in two tuneful musicals from the 1940s. In Birth of the Blues, Crosby (assisted by Mary Martin, Jack Teagarden and loads of specialty performers) tells the story of how jazz was born. In Blue Skies, Bing vies with Fred Astaire for the affection of Joan Caulfield. Irving Berlin wrote the Blue Skies score, which includes Astaire's signature number, "Puttin' on the Ritz."
