A must-see classic. California's Gold Rush is in full swing when mail-order bride Miriam Hopkins arrives in San Francisco to meet her fiancé. But he's dead, thanks in large part to gangster casino owner Edward G. Robinson. Hopkins begrudgingly becomes Robinson's casino entertainer to earn her keep, but she quickly grows tired of his strong-arm habits and runs away, falling in love with thoughtful prospector Joel McCrea.
