Silver-screen luminary Vivien Leigh stars as the titular 19th-century Russian noblewoman wed to a stuffy Czarist bureaucrat (Ralph Richardson). When a debonair and daring army officer sweeps Anna off her feet, the resulting scandal destroys her societal standing. But her proud spouse refuses to dissolve the marriage and keeps Anna from seeing her son. Having sacrificed everything for naught, the disconsolate Anna sees only one way out.
