Henry Fonda stars as Robert Leffingwell, the president's hand-picked candidate for secretary of state, in Otto Preminger's examination of party politics and Washington wheelings and dealings. But Leffingwell is hardly a shoe-in. A Senate committee has been assigned to investigate the nominee's past, dredging up dirt and brewing a storm of scandal. Charles Laughton provides a memorable turn as the Dixiecrat determined to sink the appointment.
