A younger man naively falls for an older woman in this adaptation of Benjamin Constant's heart-wrenching novel. Twenty-something Adolphe (Stanislas Merhar) is smitten when he meets beautiful widow Ellenore (Isabelle Adjani). Ellenore, who lives with The Count (Jean Yanne) as a matter of convenience, is swept off her feet by the dashing younger man. Adolphe's feelings for Ellenore eventually wane, but Ellenore's fragile state compels him to stay.
