With her fascist husband gone for the day to witness Mussolini's first meeting with Hitler, world-weary wife and mother Antonietta (Sophia Loren) seeks escape from her dreary tenement home. As many in Rome gather to attend the rally, Antonietta invites the unknown into her life. She befriends her gay neighbor, Gabriele (Marcello Mastroianni), and the two develop a special bond that will forever change their lives.
