When rain destroys the records of tax collector Ning (Leslie Cheung), he ignores a Taoist swordsman's warning and takes shelter in a haunted temple. Nearby, he meets Nieh Hsiao-Tsing (Joey Wong), a beautiful ghost who attracts men so her tree-spirit master can sap their life force with a monstrous tongue. Ning falls in love with Nieh, and he fights to set her free against the demon lord she must marry.
