Fashion buyer Samantha (Joanne Woodward) heads to Paris to check out current trends. On her way, she meets reporter Steve (Paul Newman), who's less than impressed with Samantha's dull appearance. Upon arriving in Paris, Samantha gets a makeover at a local beauty salon and bumps into Steve a short time later. Unaware that she's same woman he met on the plane, Steve writes about his new friend, and Samantha goes along with the charade.
