Narrated by Joe Morton, this "American Experience" documentary recounts the 1869 quest of Civil War veteran John Wesley Powell (voice of Peter Coyote) to chart the unexplored land and breathtaking beauty of the Grand Canyon. Ninety-nine days after he and his team set out by boat to face the dangerous and unknown terrain, Powell emerged from the vast canyon and opened America's eyes to the rugged splendor of the region.
