On the eve of World War II, Dr. Ravic (Anthony Hopkins), a German, escapes to Paris in order to avoid the Nazi regime. Hoping to go unnoticed, Ravic changes his identity and resumes a medical practice. Late one night, the doctor helps Joan Madou (Lesley-Anne Down), a suicidal woman attempting to jump off a bridge. Ravic talks her down and the two begin a steamy love affair, but with both hiding terrible secrets, are they headed for tragedy?
