Akira Kurosawa's directorial debut centers on the relationship between Judo's creator, Shogoro Yano (Denjiro Okochi), and his zealous protégé, Sanshiro Sugata (Susumu Fujita). Sugata becomes a judo master under sensei Yano's tutelage and goes on to advocate Judo over jujitsu as the ultimate martial arts form. Yukiko Todoroki, Ryonosuke Tsukigata and Akitake Kono also star. Kurosawa followed this film with a 1945 sequel, Sanshiro Sugata 2.
