When government troops march into Barcelona at the beginning of Spain's civil war in 1936, devout young nun Maria (Ariadna Gil) is forced to leave her convent and take shelter in, of all places, a bordello. But the arrival of a fiery idealist named Pilar (Ana Belén) -- who's recruiting women for a splinter group dedicated to anarchy -- soon turns Maria's world upside down in this epic drama from director Vincente Aranda.
