The Hunchback of Notre Dame

Publicly lashed for trying to abduct the lovely Esmeralda (Patsy Ruth Miller), grotesque bell-ringer Quasimodo (Lon Chaney) comes to love the gypsy girl after she alone takes pity on him. When Esmeralda is later unjustly sentenced to death, Quasimodo rushes to her rescue, taking her to Notre Dame Cathedral where he defends her by raining stone blocks and molten lead on the crowds below. Chaney's great performance made him a major film star.
