The disintegration of a 30-year union -- and the resulting upheaval that ripples through the entire family -- is the subject of this unsentimental drama. Gene Hackman stars as Harry MacKenzie, whose 50th birthday and introduction to the corner tavern's shapely new barmaid (Ann-Margret) act as catalysts for the end of his marriage. Left to pick up the pieces are his devastated wife (Ellen Burstyn) and grown daughters (Amy Madigan and Ally Sheedy).
