The story focuses on recluse Serafina (Magnani), who longs for her dead husband, but finds she's unable to cope after learning of his infidelities. Fragile and depressed, Serafina serendipitously meets Alvaro (Burt Lancaster), whose zest ignites her desire to live life to its fullest.
