After spending time in a mental institution, Hunter "Patch" Adams (Robin Williams) decides to become a doctor, based on his light-hearted hypothesis that introducing patients to humor will significantly improve their quality of life. As he embarks on his new career, Adams believes in curing people using laughter rather than cold, analytical processes. But his unconventional healing methods could jeopardize his future in medicine.
