Professional race-car driver Frank Capua (Paul Newman) takes a breather from the racing circuit to focus on fatherhood after marrying a single mother (Joanne Woodward) with a 13-year-old son (Richard Thomas). But when Frank decides to participate in the Indianapolis 500 -- the racing world's greatest spectacle -- he immerses himself in his work, driving his neglected wife into the arms of a rival (Robert Wagner).
