Netflix Delivers a Dozen Easter Eggs to Film Buffs

Hidden Features Another Bonus Found On DVDs

LOS GATOS, Calif. (April 4, 2003) - The Easter Bunny is not the only one delivering Easter Eggs this spring. In fact, Netflix -- the world's largest online movie rental service -- delivers Easter Egg-packed DVDs year-round to mailboxes nationwide.

"Easter Eggs" are hidden treasures and trivia found on DVDs, accessible through nimble-fingered button pressing or arcane insiders' knowledge. Because making a DVD takes long hours, at some point -- probably late at night, when the caffeine really kicks in -- industrious DVD creators hide outtakes, inside jokes, extra footage and other goodies in the menus of select DVDs they create. Netflix's film critic, James Rocchi, shares a dozen of his favorites.

Vanilla Sky - Looking for even more mysteries in Cameron Crowe's Vanilla Sky? The Easter Egg on this disc features a 6-minute candid gag reel with outtakes and additional footage from the film. Here's how to view the gag reel: Navigate to the Special Features menu, highlight Photo Galleries and press the Enter/Select button on your remote. Once on the Photo Galleries menu, highlight Special Features and press the right-arrow button on your remote. The mask icon in the upper-right section of your screen will be highlighted. Press the Enter key, and the gag reel will play.

The Royal Tenenbaums - There's a bunch of hidden features on the 2-disc Criterion Collection DVD of the Royal Tenenbaums; our favorite Easter Egg is accessed from Disc 2 by selecting the title The Criterion Collection from the six labeled icons on the main menu. Position the arrow to point toward the title The Criterion Collection. Now press Enter, and Ben Stiller will treat you to a short but nevertheless entertaining "formal introduction" and welcome to the DVD.

An Evening With Kevin Smith - There are nine Easter Eggs on this 2-disc set! One of the best? On Disc 2, hilarity ensues when Kevin Smith verbally accosts audience members who attempt to leave midway through his show. To view this Egg, go to Disc 2's Scene Selection menu and hit Enter. From there, press the down arrow twice to highlight Smith's shoe. Hit enter to watch the fun, games and cruelty unfold.

Insomnia - The DVD for this Al Pacino thriller has a great Egg: footage of an avalanche that occurred on location while the movie was being filmed! From the main menu, go to Special Features and hit Enter. From there, go to Production Diaries and hit Enter. Press the up-arrow button to highlight Features, and then press the left-arrow button. One of the pencils in the picture will turn blue. Hit Enter, and you will see footage of the avalanche as well as the reactions of the cast and crew.

The Ring - Now, you can watch the infamous killer tape for yourself! From the main menu, click the right-arrow button, and then the down-arrow button three times, and the pointer should disappear. Select Enter, and you'll get to watch the infamous videotape of doom. ...

Top Secret - The DVD for this early Val Kilmer spy spoof has an Easter Egg that shows an "alternate take" of the infamous Swedish bookshop scene, one of the best, dumbest gag sequences in film history! From the main menu, go to Special Features and then Storyboards. Click the right-arrow button on the remote, and the professor's eye/magnifying glass will be highlighted in green. Press Enter, and you'll see the bookshop scene played forward.

Monsters, Inc. - Looking for unexpected hilarity from the cast and crew at Monsters, Inc.? This DVD is loaded with Easter Eggs, and among our favorites are the computer-generated bloopers. On Disc 2, go to the main menu and select the door that says "Humans Only." Watch the Production Tour all the way through, and at the end you'll see a screen with a number of untitled doors. Each of these doors takes you to another unannounced feature on the disc, including test footage, bloopers and more!

Spider-Man - On this 2-disc DVD loaded with Easter Eggs, one of the best and most entertaining is the gag reel created by the animation team that includes Spider-Man doing aerobics! From the main menu on the first DVD in the set, select Special Features and then Commentaries. Once on the Commentaries screen, move the arrow to the Special Features menu entry at the bottom of the screen and press the left-arrow key on your remote control to highlight a Spider-Man symbol. Press Enter, and 3 minutes of test footage called CGI Bloopers will show some jokes by the CGI team -- such as Spider-Man imitating Pac-Man, Spider-Man's disembodied hands climbing a wall, an X-ray view of the Green Goblin's skeleton, Spider-Man and the very limber Green Goblin participating in some extensive stretching and much more!

Memento: Special Limited Edition - The ultimate Easter Egg on this DVD allows you to watch this back-to-front thriller from front to back in a recut version created by director Christopher Nolan. From the second disc, choose the Special Features menu, where you'll see several pictures. To watch Memento in chronological order, select the clock from the screen of pictures, and you'll be presented with a sequence of questions. Answer "C" to all the questions. When you get to the 6th question, order the pictures 3-4-1-2 and hit Enter. You'll see Memento begin with backward credits and unspool in reedited order from there.

Bedazzled - Sex, drugs, and rock and roll! Want to see a scene that was cut in order to get Bedazzled a PG-13 rating? From the disc's main menu, go to Special Features and select More to get to the second page of the special features. Press the right-arrow button, and a little devil will appear on Elizabeth Hurley's shoulder. Press Enter, and you'll see a deleted scene featuring Brendan Fraser's character's transformation into a rock star, courtesy of Elizabeth Hurley's meddling Satan. There's actually a warning screen for this Easter Egg: As you might guess, it's some raw, Osborne-esque stuff.

The Godfather Collection: Bonus Disc - Who would have thought James Caan was such a funny guy? Of the many Eggs from The Godfather Collection, we love James Caan's imitation of Marlon Brando the best. On the 5th disc (bonus selections), go to the Family Tree and select Santino's branch. Select Sonny to see Santino Corleone's biography, and highlight the photograph of "Adult" Sonny. Access the Egg by highlighting James Caan's head shot and then pressing Enter. You'll see a clip from Caan's Godfather screen test where he does an amusing imitation of Marlon Brando in On the Waterfront.

Zoolander - Ben Stiller makes the list again this year for his fashion comedy Zoolander. First, go to the Special Features menu and select More. From there, go to the Photo Galleries selection just above the spinning "M" and press the right-arrow button to highlight the "M." Press Enter, and you'll see Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson practicing their moves for the climactic "walk off" scene, including commentary by Stiller.
